Definition of Anatomy
Anatomy is the branch of biology that studies the structure of an organism and its constituting parts at a macroscopic level (it focuses on describing the organs and the systems of an organism).

The word anatomy comes from the ancient Greek term *ἀνατομία (*anatomía), or ἀνατομή (anatomḗ, “dissection”), where ἀνά means “up” and τέμνω, to “cut”, or ”incise”, so literally to “cut up”.

Herophilus of Alexandria (325-255 B.C) is considered the Father of Anatomy because he did the first documented scientific cadaveric dissections.

Although religious authorities discouraged dissections of human corpses until the 13th century, Leonardo da Vinci revived the public interest in anatomy by publishing his groundbreaking anatomical illustrations of the human body an its organ systems and the subject began being researched again and taught in universities.
