The Cockcroft-Gault Creatinine clearance equation

The Cockcroft-Gault equation

A creatinine clearance calculator is a tool used to estimate the rate at which creatinine, a waste product produced by muscle metabolism, is cleared from the body by the kidneys. The calculator typically uses a person's creatinine level, age, weight, and sex to estimate their creatinine clearance rate, which can provide insight into the function of the kidneys.

A low creatinine clearance rate may indicate a problem with kidney function, such as a kidney disease. A creatinine clearance calculator is a quick and easy way to obtain an estimate of creatinine clearance and it can be used in a clinical setting or in research.

The Cockcroft-Gault equation is typically used to estimate creatinine clearance in people with normal or stable kidney function. It may not be as accurate in people with abnormal kidney function or in certain populations, such as older adults or critically ill patients.

It's important to note that the creatinine clearance estimated by the Cockcroft-Gault equation is not an actual measurement of creatinine clearance, it's an estimation, and it should be interpreted with caution, especially in patients with abnormal kidney function.

It is advised to not use this equation in children, but rather a cystatin C equation, as it has a better accuracy for the age range of 13-18 years. Please refer to our cited material for more information. You can find other calculators, like the new CKD-EPI 2021 formulas for estimating clearances in the nephrology calculators section.

It is recommended to use an alternative method, such as a cystatin C equation, when estimating creatinine clearance in children, as it provides more accurate results for those between the ages of 13 and 18. For more detailed information, please refer to the cited material. Additionally, other calculators, such as the CKD-EPI 2021 formulas, can be found in the nephrology calculators section to estimate clearances.

Donald W. Cockcroft, M.D., F.R.C.P.(C) is a Professor in the Division of Respirology, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Department of Medicine, at the University of Saskatchewan.

Dr. Donald Cockcroft is a Canadian nephrologist, who along with Dr. John Gault, developed the Cockcroft-Gault equation in 1976, which is widely used to estimate creatinine clearance in adults. He is a professor emeritus of Medicine at the University of Ottawa, Canada.

He was also a researcher at the Ottawa General Hospital, Canada. Dr. Cockcroft's research is mainly focused on the kidney diseases, including the estimation of creatinine clearance and its application in the management of patients with kidney disease, and also on the pharmacokinetics of drugs in patients with chronic kidney disease.

He has published many papers and articles in peer-reviewed journals. His contributions are well recognized in the field of nephrology, and the Cockcroft-Gault equation is still widely used in clinical practice and research today.
